Electric Scooter Battery Safety: Charging, Storage and Maintenance

Electric Scooter Battery Safety: Charging, Storage and Maintenance

The short answer: charge with the supplied charger, on a hard surface, never overnight unattended, and stop using the scooter if the battery case is dented or swollen. Lithium-ion packs fail from physical damage, over-discharge, heat or counterfeit chargers — not from normal use.

Why battery fires happen

Lithium-ion battery fires in e-mobility devices are almost always caused by one of four things:

  • Physical damage — a dented or punctured cell short-circuits internally
  • Counterfeit or mismatched chargers — wrong voltage or current stresses the pack
  • Over-discharge — draining to zero repeatedly damages cells
  • Heat — charging in direct sunlight or storing in a hot car

Veloflow battery specifications and certification

Veloflow battery packs are UL2271 certified (the US standard for e-mobility batteries) and carry UN38.3 transport certification for safe shipping. They are IPX4 water-resistant, meaning protection against splashes from any direction. Models use Fosen cells with intelligent battery management systems (BMS) that balance cells and cut off on over-current or over-temperature.

Safe charging checklist

  1. Use only the charger that came in the box — Veloflow includes the matching charger with each scooter
  2. Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface away from curtains, beds and exits
  3. Do not charge unattended overnight or while you are away from home
  4. Unplug when full; most scooters charge in 6-10 hours depending on model
  5. Never charge a wet scooter — dry the charge port first

Storage rules

  • Store at 40-60% charge if you will not ride for over a month
  • Keep the scooter indoors in winter — cold batteries lose capacity and cannot charge below about 0°C
  • Avoid storing fully charged in extreme heat

When to stop using the battery

  • The case is dented, cracked or swollen
  • The scooter shuts down early or range drops sharply
  • The charger gets hot during normal charging
  • You smell unusual odors from the battery area

In those cases, stop riding and contact support for diagnosis. See the warranty page for coverage details or the FAQ for charging times by model.
